Shiatsu |
Shiatsu is a Japanese massage technique. The word Shiatsu literally translates as «finger pressure» and was a development from Chinese acupuncture and massage. The original style was developed by Tokujiro Namikoshi in the early 1900´s. This is the form of Shiatsu officialy licensed by the Ministry of Health in Japan. In the Ministry´s definition it is stated that only the thumbs, fingers and palms of the hands are to be used. This original style of Shiatsu is based on an anatomical and psychological understanding of the body. The forms of Shiatsu which use elbows, knees, feet, etc. and are based on the TCM meridian view of the body were all developed by students of Namikoshi, who changed the original form.
Shiatsu treatments are performed usually with the client lying on a futon or padded mat on the floor. The Shiatsu therapist applies comfortable pressure to parts of the body using hands, thumbs, elbows knees and feet. The aim of the therapist, through this pressure work, is to balance or unblock the flow of «chi» energy through the meridians of the body. Shiatsu therapy is holistic, the therapist treats the whole body as well as the specific condition. It is a popular and effective form of therapy. It is a deeply relaxing experience. Sessions last between 40 and 60 minutes after the therapist has initially taken a detailed case history to formulate a picture of the client´s health according to the principles of oriental medicine. Aches and pains in the back and shoulders, headaches, insomnia, digestive problems, stress and improved circulation are just some of the many conditions addressed with Shiatsu.
