Tibetan Medicine
Tibetan medicine is a science, an art and a philosophy that provides a holistic approach to health care.

A short introduction cannot do justice to such a complexity. So I won´t even try but invite you to read up on the website of H.H.The Dalai Lama. I rather focus on the results of this complexity.

" The physician shall not commence treatment before he knows the origins and causes of the disease" - a principal of Tibetan medicine.

Pulse reading is the most important form of diagnosys. The three middle fingers are placed on the radial arteries. Urine samples, visiual observations and questioning also play a role in diagnosys. Some 84.000 diseases are recognized and diagnosed with these methods. There are four categories of origin of diseases:

1. due to past life (karma)
2. due to early life
3. due to present life
4. due to spirit influence

The human body consists of three principal energies: rLung, mKhris-pa and bad-kan.
When these energies are properly aligned the body is healthy, free from psycho-physiological disorders - in the state of equilibrium.

Disequilibrium in any of these energies constitutes a state of disorder, or ill health.

Ill health is primarily caused by diet and lifestsyle. The first form of treatment in Tibetan medicine is therefore to change a patient´s diet and lifestyle. Only if this fails to remedy the patient´s condition will the physician apply medicines.

Tibetan medicines are usually prescribed in very small doses. They come in form of pills, powders, syrups and are made from Himalayan plants. There are massage techniques, medical baths and natural spring baths and blood-letting techniques.

In the 17th century the Four Tantras (rGyud-bzhi) were written. These medical texts comprising 156 chapters and 5.900 verses form the basis for teaching Tibetan medicine today.

The guardian deity of Tibetan medicine is the Medicine Buddha - carrying a bowl of long-life elixir and a potent medical plant, the Myrobalam fruit.
