Environmental medicine examines interactions between environment and human health.
In 2006 the European Commission stated: "Long-term exposure to pesticides can lead to serious disturbances to the immune system, sexual disorders, cancers, sterility, birth defects, damage to the nervous system and genetic damage."
Many scientists now acknowledge that by using antibiotics we encourage the rapid spread of antibiotic-resistant infections. It has long been known that overuse of antibiotics on factory farms leads to antibiotic resistance in food poisoning bacteria, like salmonella. Evidence has also implicated intensive farming in the rise of two serious superbugs: a new strain of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in farm animals, which is spreading rapidly and transferring to humans, and a new and almost untreatable type of E.coli that is causing large numbers of deaths worldwide, especially among the elderly.
The decline of honey bee populations worldwide is an issue solved by environmental medicine in France.
France experienced its first bee hive collapse in 1994 which coincided with the introduction of the insecticide "Gaucho" made by Bayer. The key ingredient is a Neonicotinoid called "Imidacloprid". After Gaucho and others containing Neonicotinoids were banned the bee population stopped collapsing and recovered. Germany, Slovenia and Italy followed suit and banned Gaucho and others in 2008 as well. Logically their bee populations recovered as well.
Bayer still exports Gaucho worldwide. Government agencies in UK and their ex-colonies still claim that beehive collapse is a mystery. Developing countries high on the corruption index still spin the media and keep on spraying Gaucho with the inevitable result of destroying the bee population. The beneficiaries are those who produce GM-foods that do not require pollination by bees.
Is it beyond the wit of politicians to look over their shoulders to France, Germany, Slovenia and Italy? |
