Fragrant oils have been used since the dawn of civilisation to benefit the mind and body.
Aromatherapy is the art of using essential oils for their healing, therapeutic qualities. These essential oils are extracted through distillation, expression and solvent extraction from flowers, fruit, stalks, roots, seeds or bark.
The therapeutic value of the essential oil is dependant on the quality of the raw material used and care should be taken in selecting oils that are certified pure and unadulterated.
As a holistic therapy, Aromatherapy benefits the mind and the body.
The oils can be used in various ways, the most common being inhalation and massage.
When inhaled the aroma stimulates the limbic part of the brain which triggers chemical activity that has both physical and emotional effects on the body.
Aromatherapy is commonly used to treat stress and to detoxify the body.
The list of conditions however that can benefit from Aromatherapy are varied and numerous.
Essential oils are highly concentrated and should NOT be used undiluted on the skin.
The potential therapeutic effects that can be realised through Aromatherapy are down to the competence, training, skill and experience of the Therapist.
