Unani, Greek-Arabic medicine |
  |
|
Unani System of Medicine or Unani Tibb, which originated in Greece, is based on the principles proposed by the philosopher and physician Hippocrates. After him Galen, a Greek practitioner contributed immensely to Unani medicine. After him, many Arab and Persian scholars enriched the system. Among them Abu Sina, known as Avicenna in the West, an Arab philosopher and physicist who wrote Kitab-al-Shifa (The Book of Healing) was noteworthy. This system earlier known as ‘Galenic’, later became Unani (Arabic name for Greek) system of medicine. Unani believes in the humoral theory that maintains the presence of four humours -Dam (blood), Balgham (phlegm), Safra (Yellow bile) and Sauda (black bile) in the body. Each humour has its own temperament - blood is hot and moist, phlegm is cold and moist, yellow bile is hot and dry and black is bile cold and dry. It believes health is a state of body in which there is equilibrium in the humours and functions of the body are normal in accordance to its own temperament and the environment. When the equilibrium of the humours is disturbed and functions of the body are abnormal in accordance to its own temperament and environment, that state is called disease. Unani medicine believes in promotion of health, prevention of diseases and cure.
Health of humans is based on the six essentials or rules (Asbabe Sitta Zaroorya) and if these are followed health is maintained otherwise there will be diseases. Six essentials are:
1. Atmospheric Air
2. Drinks and Food
3. Sleep and Wakefulness
4. Excretion and Retention
5. Physical activity and Rest
6. Mental activity and Rest
Diseases are mainly diagnosed with the help of pulse (Nabz), physical examination of the urine and stool. Also, patients are examined systematically to make the diagnosis easy to spot with the help of simple, modern gadgets.
Diseases are treated in traditionally:
1. Regimenal Therapy (Ilajbil Tadjbeer): Some drugless regimens are advised for the treatment of certain ailments i.e. Exercise, Massage, Turkish bath (Hamam), Douches (Cold and Hot).
2. Dietotherapy (Ilajbil Ghiza): It deals with certain ailments by administration of specific diets or by regulating the quantity and quality of food.
Pharmacotherapy (Ilajbil Dava): It deals with the use of naturally occurring drugs mostly of herbal origin. Some drugs of animal and mineral origin are also used. People are treated either by single drugs or by compound drugs (formulations of single drugs).
Surgery (Ilajbil Yad): Sometimes surgeries can be performed.
