Psychoneuroimmunology and Psychneuroendocrinology are emerging medical sciences that study the interrelation of consciousness with the nervous, endoctrine and immune system.
Studies reveal that our physical health is largely dependent on our mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing - revelations that will cause a revolution in western allopathic medicine.
- thoughts and feelings create a complex cascade of biochemical changes which directly effect our health and wellbeing.
- chronic stress plays havoc with the immune system. Nerve endings have been found in tissues that produce, develop and store immune system cells. The thymus, lymph nodes, spleen and bone marrow (all vital parts of the immune system) have been found to respond to signals from the brain.
- during relaxation practises in meditation, yoga and tai chi the body produces more of the molecule nitric oxide, which antidotes the damaging effects of the stress hormone cortisol.
- mental attitude not only influences how readily we become sick, but also how quickly we recover from illness, wounds and surgery.
- the placebo effect results from very real changes in the body´s physical health, caused by a psychological belief and expectation.
These sciences have found evidence that a human does not only have a body consisting of individual parts that requires treatment by body part specialists, but that body, mind and spirit are inseparable entities. WOW!
Since I wrote this PNI and PNE have evolved.
Sue Barley sheds light on this:
It is a very exciting time right now, as the emerging fields of psycho-neuroimmunology (PNI) and psycho-neuroendocrinology (PNE) have massive implications for the treatment of difficult-to-treat diseases, disorders, mind and health challenges.
PNI and PNE form part of the scientific understanding as to how your mind (in all its complexity) communicates and interacts with the body. Interesting as it is, PNI and PNE are about far more than just the mind-body connection! They are key pathways and levers for understanding:
How someone became unwell and How to bring about positive changes in that person’s health and well-being. So what are PNI and PNE?
PNI represents the dynamic connections and pathways in the body between who you are as a person, what’s important to you, how you use your mind and your immunity. PNE represents those dynamic connections with your hormonal environment (endocrine system). The science behind these connections is becoming well-studied across the world, particularly in the USA.
What is VERY important is that PNI and PNE pathways explain how ANY form of stress can lead to compromised health. So the stress could have arisen from how you used your mind (psychological), how you’ve used your body (physically), or to do with how your body functions internally (physiologically).
So ANY combination of stressors can impact on your well-being. Indeed many complex conditions and symptoms that are not-easy-to diagnose or treat conventionally (including mind problems) often have a stress dimension to them.
Which is GREAT NEWS, because it opens up a whole new range of possibilities for enhancing well-being and treating complex conditions such as CFS, some forms of cancer, autoimmune disorders and lots of other not-easily-diagnosable conditions and symptoms.

1. The International Society of Psychoneuroendocrinology (ISPNE) promotes and disseminates knowledge on hormones, their interactions with brain, and body processes and behavior, as well as their clinical applications. We have about 450 members around the word.

|
 |
2. The PsychoNeuroImmunology Research Society (PNIRS) was incorporated in the state of Pennsylvania in 1993, to promote the study of interrelationships among behavioral, neural, endocrine and immune processes and to encourage collaborations among immunologists, neuroscientists, clinicians, health psychologists and behavioral neuroscientists.

3. Leverage your unique YOU-ness for happiness, health and well-being. Dr Sue Barley offers specialized clinics to restore pivotal mind-pathways that steer the PNI and PNE interfaces towards health, happiness and well-being. Sue has trained with the respected Dr Alex Concorde in the emerging fields of psycho-neurology, stress and mind-body medicine. She practices in the UK and offers trainings worldwide.
